What hypnosis is NOT

To begin with we have to talk about the many misconceptions and myths about hypnosis. The common image we have of hypnosis derives from show / stage hypnosis and movies that suggest that hypnosis produces an unusual state of consciousness associated with loss of willpower and self-control and that hypnosis induces a trance and compels individuals to steal, kill, or disclose secrets. Many people erroneously think of hypnosis as a state of deep sleep or being unconcious and “out of it" which is absolutely not correct.

Given these hypnosis myths, it is not surprising that many people are afraid of being hypnotized. The reality of clinical hypnosis, hypnotherapy or hypnosis as a coaching method could not differ more from those misconceptions.
